The Russian invasion of Ukraine is a great example of how sometimes you can "win" and still lose. Even if Ukraine capitulated today the cost was nowhere near worth it. The Russian military has been gutted, the economy is circling the drain(as admitted by the Russian Central Bank), 1,000,000+ casualties, Russia has lost massive amounts of soft power throughout the world. All that for what? A land bridge to Crimea? Hardly worth the massive cost. It will take Russia decades to fully recover, if it ever does.
