If you read starship troopers the punchline is that the main character is Filipino. You suspect from the very beginning given his family and name but it's only confirmed at the very end.

People interpret the book as a straight shooting defense of American "gotcha!" legalism, the competence of the military and maybe a little bit of self conscious jealousy of the glory afforded a dirty job.

But I think it's more likely that the book is just a long-form racist joke about asians being bigger bugs than literal bugs.

There would be no other reason a main character would be so dull and compliant.
