The US administration intends to gradually terminate some foreign defense assistance funding programs for Eastern European countries bordering Russia, including Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania.
This decision is related to the desire to encourage NATO allies to increase their own defense spending. These are programs provided for in Section 333 of the National Defense Authorization Act, which include training and equipping the armed forces.
Funding for these programs, which amounts to about $1.2 billion per year, will be terminated by September 2026, unless Congress extends it.
