See, Russia's been fucked from the start.
They didn't just expect a quick war, their entire national strategy REQUIRED IT (hence why they didn't move their money out of Europe).

If they'd been realistic early, they might have still gotten something they could call a "gain", but now? They've pushed their economy to where only the war is preventing collapse, and MANY things become possible once that starts.
