I think they just look okay. Nothing amazing. Then again I think those images are just concepts, not the fully realized vision, a completed "Mania 2" probably would have looked better. I agree with you regarding the surreal stuff, I got into the series from the Adventure games so it makes sense that I prefer it that way, that's something I liked about the series in the first place. I like the Special Stages being abstract, since it's another dimension, so I also think you make a good point about CD
I don't like Lost World's style, but that would also justify that game as well... if they didn't use those same trees on the ground and in the forest area in Forces lol
