I actually disagree - I hugely suspect you would've had a much more positive opinion of Project S if the direction & visuals were stronger and the script remained the same. If it had Catfight Club-tier direction it would've had a very similar impact.

The deranged polarized retardation you speak of is far more of an issue than Korean immigrants existing in Japan, them accepting gay people or whatever. Stuff like Osamu Tezuka publishing manga in a right-wing magazine without changing his views at all, or Riyoko Ikeda being on friendly terms with LDP people, is hard to picture current-day America or among people hugely influenced by its zeitgeist.
