In just four months, nearly 123,000 flights have been disrupted by Russian signals interfering with GPS and other satellite systems, a report from Sweden and five neighboring countries, obtained by SVT, says.
This development poses a growing danger to flight safety, the countries write in their report to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
Authorities have also traced the source of the interference. Measurements have located jammers in Russia's Kaliningrad, St. Petersburg, Smolensk, and Rostov.
European authorities have issued special notices to pilots and urged airlines to strengthen preparedness.
It is reported that between January and April 2025, a total of 122,607 flights from 365 airlines were affected. In some airspaces, more than 40 percent of flights were impacted. The disruptions have affected airspace over Poland, the Baltics, Finland, and Sweden. Effects can continue even after aircraft leave the affected area. Both jamming (blocking of signals) and spoofing (false GNSS signals) have been observed.
