There's lots of areas where they could refine the dialogue to be shorter. But the problem isn't actually the dialogue. It's the formula of the game. You have to go to the past and solve whatever the islands problems are. Then go back to the present and solve yet another problem in the same area. And many of these story arcs are the longest in DQ history, until Dragon Quest XI came along.
The problem of the game is pacing. If you total up all the dialogue sequences, it's probably only 10-12 hours. Out of an 80-100 hour game. That tells you how much backtracking and repetition the gameplay has. I mean, you don't even get your last two party members until like 50-60 hours into the game. And then you have to grind them for hours to get their jobs up...it's just bad pacing.
