I'll go ahead and get myself lambasted by the wanna-be elitists who are lurking since no one else will.
As an avid listener, it's more of an umbrella term used mainly to describe older (as in 90s) electronic acts that are less danceable and more experimental. People like Aphex Twin and Squarepusher also happen to be known for their use of breakbeat in their tracks and such usage gave rise to breakcore (Which used to be referred to as Drill n Bass) so their relation is close. The main thing about what I consider makes a track an IDM one is the technical nature of the beats and/or the sound design. IDM is basically just meant to be appreciated with headphones by yourself. Also the I in IDM stands for intelligent but I don't think anyone who uses the term IDM actually thinks its more intelligent to listen to than EDM. I just feel like IDM is just a more widely recognized term than braindance so I stick to it. IDM is also a lot less popular than EDM despite it's inferentiality and also a bit more difficult to make since you'd already have to have a grasp on the basics in order to experiment with them.
