Well, EC is a good place to start. Dailies and to a lesser extent, Sundays, offer a variety of material. European comics are worth checking out - 2000AD and Metal Hurlant/Heavy Metal usually have a bit of pleasant edge to them.
One easy thing is to pay attention to writers or artists you enjoy, then look up their bibliography and go from there.
