Anon, Nvidia didn't need IP to capitalize on an idea, They would do so because it's a good idea. Ideas aren't scarce resources to be property.
What IP was and is, is a detriment to everyone as even the monopolist will lower it's capabilities as monopolistic practices tend to lower the quality of a firm itself. The moment their IP expires/loses relevance, they would be devastated more so than an actually competitive firm.
Which ties into my first reply as;
