>Image creators see a future for comics, but AI makes it unclear
>The creatives behind Image Comics showcased a strong lineup of continuing titles as well as a brand new ongoing from the veteran team of writer Jeff Lemire and artist Dustin Nguyen, but the future appeared a little murky for the medium in the age of AI.
>“I don’t know what this is going to look like five, 10, 20 years from now for all of us,” said Marjorie Liu, who is celebrating the 10th anniversary of her series Monstress. “What I do know is that AI is being normalized at the school level and in general all throughout society.”
>The Image Comics panel came a day after DC Comics’ Jim Lee spoke at the publisher’s retailer day, where he stated unequivocally there would be no place for AI in storytelling or artwork for the company while he was in charge. The independent creators, by and large, agreed.
>“One thing I do say about artists that do use AI, how do you feel about yourself when you use it?” artist Dustin Nguyen said. “Looks good, everyone’s applauding you for it, but deep down you should feel guilty that you didn’t really do it.”
>Caspar Wijngaard, artist on The Power Fantasy along with writer Kieron Gillen, added how he felt the technology could be diminishing the collaborative nature of creative teams, especially the contributions of the artists to the work.
>“I see my name credited less next to a writer since the advent of AI,” he said. “It’s slowly being more Kieron Gillen’s The Power Fantasy and not what it was like five years ago when I worked on books, when it was the writer and the artist.”
