I just have the impression that Sugar is too empathetic/compassionate/understanding for her own good, and she's aware of this but can't reconcile that it's possible for her to live by non-violence/loving-compassion without treating it as dogma or hating herself for it.

It feels deliberate that Steven is framed as a failed Jesus figure, but out of touch considering that so much of the anime and manga that Sugar loves revolves around Buddhism (which has a lot more nuance when it comes towards violence and radical compassion). It's like Sugar still clings to contemporary Christian/Jewish views on morality where hitting the bad guy makes you just as bad, but she knows deep down that no amount of understanding/compassion will stop assholes from doing what they do if they aren't interested in having a conversation in the first place.
