It worked, and while I actually really like the idea of making a powerful weapon with a stack of helpful ammo a secret you have to find (and then also fight for, hard), I didn't really like that I felt I needed that secret to beat it.
But I suppose that just reflects the gameplay in question being a hair above my paygrade, and I do still have a lot of fun with the rest of the map.
