Pain is what drives and motivates us. Pleasure, also known as sin, is what helps covers up and distracts ourselves from that pain. This is the base step. When we free ourselves from this pain we have only pleasure to drive us. You end up with three possible outcomes. Degenerates who only chase pleasure to fuel themselves at the cost of everything else, this is your Freemasons and old people. You have people who completely ignore pleasure and end up killing themselves or having an empty life, you get Buddhists. Then you get most other people who chain themselves to their work or a cause such as art, charity or a social cause so they can feel pain again to motivate themselves.
This is why we are bound by pain. At least our own pain is still ourselves and our own desires. A step above that is being bound to the earth to fuel ourselves. This is why they don't teach us how to truly free ourselves of our pain. It invites a special kind of madness where you consume everything around yourself where not even ash is left over.
However there is a third step. This step is to continue on with pure willpower and self assured existence where pain nor pleasure control you. Only with this state of being can we truly make decisions for ourselves or fall into lethargy. And lethargy is the ultimate base as it is a swamp that swallows you whole and everything else. Think of it as being really tired and not wanting to get out of bed. Of course, you will eventually have to get out of bed and if the lethargy has corrupted enough you will need to go back to rebuilding even if it's in the next life cycle.
We need balance of chaos and peace for steady change, and change is life.
