I’m American. I served in the Air Force auxiliary. I know it’s exceptional hardware. Mission systems, diagnostics, and even flight operations rely heavily on proprietary software owned and controlled by Lockheed Martin and the U.S. Department of Defense. Norway can’t modify the source code or key systems. The aircraft depend on the U.S.-controlled ALIS/ODIN logistics network for maintenance data, diagnostics, and updates. In practice, this means Norway can’t operate or maintain the jets entirely independently since they rely on U.S. systems and approvals for major software updates and some spare parts. Although Norway owns the airframes and pays for maintenance, the use of the F-35s is subject to agreements with the U.S. and NATO frameworks. If Norway wanted to use them outside of NATO-sanctioned operations, it could face technical or political limitations. The U.S. can indirectly limit operations by withholding certain updates, data, or support.
