If you haven't played the remake of system shock one then I suggest you at least look up some of the enemy voice lines in it. They're honestly one of the better additions in the game. I feel like they really help to tie it more to the second thematically with humans being brutally dismembered and twisted into cybernetic abominations and trying desperately to cling to their rapidly dwindling humanity. The confusion and dread that occasionally leaks through as they regain some self-awareness is just great.
