I'm genuinely still struggling to establish a standard approach here.
What is the correct strategy when someone humiliates you in public (or private), when it's obvious that it's not your fault (or you did an honest mistake and the hostile party is just over reacting). Suck it up and deescalate, or attack with an equal force?
Every single book I've read on that topic says the same - just pretend it doesn't bother you at all and play it cool. But doesn't that just enable bad behavior? By reacting harmless you just show the bully that his behavior is acceptable. But when you actually get all worked up you show that they have control over your emotions, so what is the correct approach here? Sigmund Freud said that it's important to take revenge, because otherwise your impotence in that moment will haunt you.
