Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook, a key figure in Religious Zionism, justified Zionism according to Jewish law, and urged young religious Jews to support efforts to settle the land, and the secular Labour Zionists to give more consideration to Judaism. Kook saw Zionism as a part of a divine scheme which would result in the resettlement of the Jewish people in its homeland. This would bring Geula ("salvation") to Jews, and then to the entire world.
In contrast, some Jewish groups, such as Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP), unequivocally oppose Zionism because it is counter to their ideals of justice, equality, and freedom for all people.
The relation between Zionism and Judaism is paradoxical and complex. In its early days, Zionism was apparently a thoroughly secular political movement. However, some religious figures, like Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook, saw Zionist colonization of Palestine and the eventual founding of a Jewish state as part of a divine plan, culminating in the coming of the Messiah
