Haunted felt like it was supposed to be the end of his story, but they needed an antagonist for the filler expansion. The season's actual main plot was him sloughing off the opulence and becoming a purely psionic being that would be the Witness's herald, which is a coherent and direct continuation from Presage and how he was talked about in its lore book, and then he was back to his old jovial self for the majority of Lightfall.
