Less personal decisions I regret
I like to imagine I’m on the expedition Irumyuui was on that was dying in a very deep mystical place full of ruins and defying common sense conventions, in Made in Abyss, I’d pistol whip Vueko for giving an item with unknown and untested effects in an, at times eldritch, beautiful and mysterious ruins to “save” the life of Irumyuui, and if I didn’t, and went along with trying to rescue Irumyuui, I’d pistol whip her for not letting us kill the children she was birthing that were born without digestive tracts and starved to death, likely suffering, either lambasting her for not letting us kill them immediately because making soup out of them stopped the deaths of the exploration team better than waiting or them to suffer on the off chance they’d live and die and their flesh still be useful but to a lesser extent and them suffer, absolutely despondent I don’t have anything to stop their births.
I’d explain that the Abyss is full of ruins of a prior civilization that can make wishes come true, but in order to do so, many of the times, in order to make the wish feasible in reality, whatever artifact is acting as an interface and receptor/source will induce change on you to make your wish feasible.
Most likely it’s that the ancient civilization’s technology has gone awry, or is being used improperly or not for the intended purpose entirely, and the ability to control the effects of the civilization’s technology, rebuild, modify, are lost and only nascent understanding.
