Idk anon. Let's say you're going on a holiday somewhere.
>camera with prime (zooms are for faggots)
>second prime if desired
>ND filter and spare SD card(s)
>charger and/or power bank
>1L water
>dust blower
>sandwich and snacks
>first aid kit (you're prepared, right anon?)
>water filter?
>third prime if you really want it?
>compact flash?
>on-camera mic if you want to shoot any video?
This makes a fairly strong case for a camera bag.
As far as I'm concerned, I have done both:
>sightseeing/day hiking with a crossbody only
The convenience of accessing your stuff without having to take your bag off should not be understated. The same applies to regular messenger bags but a GOOD actual camera bag justifies itself in its design over a normal bag + padded cube.
>backpacking with a standard large ruck, DSLR loosely packed on top of everything else until the trailhead
A necessity if you are carrying more stuff. It can become a huge pain in the ass to hike with a big piece of glass around your neck all day as wearing your camera crossbody is not an option when you have a backpack on. If I needed to use a backpack for some trip, I would err towards carrying just a GR or other true compact in the pocket and no other camera gear, making the discussion moot.
