Because people want more control over aspects of the town it led to you basically being the overseer of said town and dictating who moves in, who moves out, grants you numerous chances at fixing mistakes like not logging on and having someone leave, makes certain aspects that defined the series easier, etc. Furthermore it turned into this crafting sim which makes a lot of the gameplay way less fun because Golden tools aren't even a reward anymore like in the previous games since the ores are rare and the thing breaks within a week compared to your infinitely repurchasable supply of iron tools from Nook's that cost a single fish to do so.
