That isn't the problem.
The problem is that they didn't iterate and improve on it based on their own game or other soulslikes.
Even something simple like stakes of marika from elden ring (respawn points often placed near bosses, midbosses or in-between spots of bonfires you can choose to revive at) to reduce having to run long stretches to get back to where you were when dying would've been so easy to add to reduce tedium.
