The Dr. Chud theory is that it stems from male's chromosomes changing from XX to XY during conception. This change results in greater rates of variation in everything. Women, who remain XX chromosomes, have less variation in everything.
This is why women almost always NPCs, with less deviation in traits. This results in more stability, but also less potential for greatness. Everything from tastes to though patterns, opinions, ambition, intelligence, etc.
It's called variability hypothesis.
