>why not just gen in higher resolution from the start?
There are a couple reasons:

1. Generating higher-resolution images takes significantly more time and memory. The model required to envision a higher-res image is going to be a lot more resource-intensive than the model required to take an existing image and increase the resolution.

2. The main models are trained at specific resolutions--i.e., they're fed a bunch of pictures at specific resolutions during their training phase, and so they're going to be the best at producing images with those resolutions. If you try to ask for a higher resolution from the start, a lot of them will do things like adding extra heads because they just don't know what to do with the extra pixel space.

I haven't really bothered with upscalers yet since I tend to use SDXL models that are already a pretty good resolution for 4chan to begin with, so it's also a valid strategy, but you can get faster and better results a lot of the time by generating smaller pics and upscaling them.
