If I had to guess I’d say they kept the “Alaskan” part because they used a .510 bullet, and the “mag” came from 375 H&H mag brass which would have been common in Alaska at the time and looks like the likeliest belted case for conversion due to the .532 diameter belt, and how the round bells out above it where they fireformed it out.
Running the numbers in GRT, keeping it at around 23000 should give me plenty of safety margin vs the 45-70 govt rounds that were intended for contender barrels, and still give me a 480 gn bullet doing about 1300 gps out of a 15 inch barrel with 50 ft/lbs of felt recoil. If it was a touch shorter I’d consider getting a short cylinder BFR chambered in it but it’s just a hair too long. Fun project from a really fun find.. figured if the barrel was a bust I’d just get a different contender barrel.. price was right.
