I unironically hoped he would be the surprise joiner at the end of Dressrosa, having lost his purpose but also having grown as a person and already being seen as a friend by Luffy. Would've been super interesting to see his interaction with the rest of the crew, as he'd slowly grow accustomed to being a part of an actually functional and healthy family.
Don't get me wrong, I never BELIEVED he'd join, I just hoped he would.
