I feel like they'd pull from the early backstory of Sonic being a science experiment by Doctor Eggman except it would be like a really cynical take on Young Frankenstein crossed with "Star Wars but the Rebels are controlled opposition" and some commentary on the war-industrial complex. Sonic is like Che Guevara crossed with Osama Bin Laden.
>currently exists as a wayward cryptid addicted to speed hiding out in the desert with a small army at his side
Sonic would be the result of Eggman creating an enemy in order to make as much profit as possible through deforesting and capturing woodland creatures, and having said creatures wage a revolution against him. He creates Sonic to be the face of a rebellion but then continues to make money off of turning Sonic into a major mascot while selling weapons to the rebels. Eventually, Sonic discovers the truth and goes on a downward spiral as the revolution is quashed and his home is turned into another casino. Eggman kinda misses the fights they had and is now a semi-regretful philantropist but continues to do horrible shit like Bill Gates.
Naturally, this is all set up for Super Sonic attacking a federal building.
