Someone may have said this already but I feel like the Prison Ghost was a comment on the theme of voyeurism “Women in Prison” exploitation movies.

The episode only shouted out really mainstream prison movies like Cool Hand Luke and The Green Mile, but after the Giallo episode I don’t feel like it’s overreaching to assume the PSG team is familiar with the “Women in Prison” genre, and those kinds of movies often feature female prisoners being spied on by guards and wardens for the sheer pleasure of the observer.

In general, I feel like PSG is a work that’s responding to and commenting on with pop culture more than real life. It’s meant to be a surreal blend of different influences and styles from around the world. It’s tempting to interpret the show through a political lens, because there is political meaning to a lot of the media they’re riffing on and the cartoon they’re creating, but PSG feels more focused on form than content.
