Despite Fribourg being a relatively big city by Swiss standards, it does not have much football tradition, with its main club FC Fribourg struggling in the 5th tier. Its most popular sports clubs are the local hockey and basketball teams with presence in European tournaments.

The most succesful team of the canton is FC Bulle, situated in the middle of the canton, who play in the 3rd tier. They last played in the first division in 1992-93.
