Russia got away with colonization because most people are dumb. Russia’s colonies in Asia are geographically connected to it. So instead of crossing the seas they crossed a mountain range.

That’s the only difference between Russia and other European colonizers. But it’s enough that normgroids can look at a world map and just think “Russia is really big but they had no overseas colonies”.
