I'm not him so let's start with the obvious. I'll do summer. I live here.
>Get one pair of walking shoes is all you need.
>Get thick sport socks from donki.
>Get some airsm boxer shorts fron Uniqlo.
>On Amazon.co.jp or donki or any big electronics store or even drug store buy a hand fan.
Be prepared to walk is normal? I see you're from the US. You'll be walking an average of 30k steps a day minimum while doing tourism stuff
>You can save money by getting non-reserved seating on shinkansens, but you have to know what train to take and from where.
You can save a lot of money by buying tickets from ticket booth(金券ショップ) or getting a Mobal Simcard that has a Japanese phonenumber and being able to use all their apps. That means you can access ekinet / smartex / wester apps to get reserved tickets from the shinkansen 1 month in advance.
>Learn to travel light so you don't have to carry a suitcase over stairs frequently.
Learn to make "home basees" (Tokyo/Osaka/Hakata(Fukuoka)/Sapporo) and do day trips with JR Pass saves money and you get to ride the most advanced trains in the world daily. Everything closes anyways after 21 so most places have nothing to offer late at night. Only go stay for a few days at places that are really remote like Shikoku, Totori, Miyazaki, Wakayama, Shimane, Eastern Hokkaido
Wanna go to Minobu? Wake up early take Azusa to Kofu and then Minobu line to Minobu.
Wanna go to Oi River Basin? Wake up early take Tokaido Shinkansen, Switch normal line to Kanaya, Oigawa railways to from then on up.
>Public parks will most likely have a restroom, and they'll always be open.
Almost all public places have them including konbini for free and in much better shape, you just need to ask.
>If traveling around summer, keep a sweat towel on you.
Don't wear cotton, wear what the Japanese do some form of synthetic like Airsm from Uniqlo you can easily but it for super cheap in JP and they go up to XXL.
