A little lesson in anthropology
Most people (normalfaggots) do things just to be accepted into the tribe, or be part of any community.
Being an active part of the current discussion is very important for this, no matter the actual quality of the discussion itself.
Most old stuff is not part of the current discussion and being different (compared to the specific tribe one tries to be a part of) is very scary to these people.
For you and me, for people who like something for its own sake, watching things that are not current or popular is normal, but for these people is not about the product, it's about what's to gain from the product, which is the social dynamic.
A lot of people like these don't even watch the anime they talk about, they read or watch summaries.

You would be surprised how well read they are even compared to Japanese literature writers.
I remember an interview with Akiyuki Shinbou, years ago, where he was talking about his literary influences and namedropped a bunch of old Japanese classics like Natsume Souseki; and in another interview Haruki Murakami said that he never read Souseki and gave up as an adult because he found it too hard and not very interesting.
Truth of the matter is, a lot of geniuses got into anime back then because the industry was so small and unregulated, compared to the cinema industry where you needed money and connection to make what you wanted; and so they went on to make anime instead of live action because they had the freedom to who mostly whatever they wanted with their geniuses instead of making Samurai Action #345 for Toho
