the gas pushes on the bolt directly insted of pushing on the gas key like a AR15
i would say AR15s ARE true direct impingement because there is no piston spring or any sort of system that attaches the gas key to the bolt on a AR15 it is directly connected and part of the bolt carrier
so in my opinion the gas is still directly IMPINGEING on the bolt carrier

but the MAS-49 is your answer
