for most of modern times, "fiction is fiction" was universally understood and accepted as a moral axiom. Because sane adults understood that everyone is free to think whatever whacky stuff they want inside their mind's palace, and "paper holds anything". What matters are your deeds, not your words, less so your thoughts.
Because the world is full of real dangers and problems and nobody has the time to care about words on fantasy books or lines on a canvas. Ultimately, if one found something personally appalling, the reasonable course of action was to disengage. Because once again, who has the time to worry about fiction?
This is the world I grew up in. This world no longer exists. I currently live in a dystopian parallel dimension where people get arrested for posting memes while gangs rape little girls in the open.
