Ironically you guys were considered Western back then whilst Greeks were not, because North Africa was in the Latin West of the Roman Empire (where Catholicism developed) whereas Byzantium was the Greek Orthodox East.

It was a mistake by Justinian to reconquer the Latin West, he should've kept his resources for defending the Greek East which would've proved useful when the Muslims first appeared! The Gothic and other European barbarians in North Africa would've probably been better equipped to defend it from mudslides (if they'd even managed to get passed a better-defended Byzantine Egypt).
