So, eventually Lula gets back to power, and our relationship improves for a little while, but then worsens again when Venezuela threatens to invade Guyana for that piece of land that they claim. You see, a long goal of Brazilian foreign policy is to establish our country as a leading figure in South America, with the goal of eventually having a permanent UN security council seat, and Lula specially seems to have a desire of taking up international causes. Anything that makes us look incapable of handling that, like say, one of our neighbors invading the others doesn't do us any favors. To make matters worse, due to the geography in the region, the easiest way for Venezuela to actually invade Guyana is going through our territory, driving through a road we have there, and nobody, from the common people to our military would ever tolerate that.
Eventually, things calm down somewhat. Venezuela has an election, that is internationally contested and our media also questions it, making it inconvenient to be perceived as close to Maduro. At some point, Venezuela makes a formal request to join BRICS. This request is then vetoed by Lula. The reasons he did that for are debated, with some saying Lula wanted to punish Venezuela for the threats to invade Guyana, while others saying its to appease the Americans. That's about where we are right now.
