Unlike Earth, where the lithosphere is broken into several moving plates, Venus has a single, continuous crust. This is known as the stagnant lid model. On Earth, the asthenosphere, a partially molten layer beneath the lithosphere, allows the plates to slide around. Venus, however, appears to lack this low-viscosity layer, so its crust is locked in place.
