They have the same origins in the Enlightenment. Marxism was like a radical evolution of that and the core revolutionary French ideals of liberty, equality, and fraternity. Marx also saw liberalism as playing a progressive historical role, but Marx was also, like, class society makes the fulfillment of those ideals impossible without a revolution that goes further and goes after private property.

In any case, ideas are like streams of water. They are constantly flowing around and together. It's common for ideas that start on the fringes to work their way towards the center, and ideas that start in the center to flow to the fringe, always mixing together in interesting ways.
