Seems like a smart idea. Would be good for group content when you need to deal a load of damage to a group and can afford to lose a player even briefly.
Maybe include an expensive or long cooldown spell that allows for a self revive on knockout, so you could still use it solo.
have it bloat up the caster like a lewd nuke as well

Character customisation is honestly one of the more important factors in a game to me. There are some games that are supposed to be really good that I've just never got into because the character designs didn't appeal, or I couldn't make my own character.
And conversely there are probably some games that I've given more time than I really should have just because I really liked making my own characters.
It's not even a self insert thing, I never make "myself" in a game.
