Late 70's is when Mesa really took off. They were soooo much better than other amps widely available at the time.
That doesn't mean the one in your neighborhood is better than, or even as good as, what you can buy new today (though I would never buy a new Mesa ever again after what Gibson did to Randall).
And what a player wants from an amp varies. Are you looking for a lot of 8.5/10 sounds from an off-the-show-floor box that you can replace in any town you visit? Or do you want a Dumble that's so expensive you need a secure vault for it but it sounds like God?
Hint: stay away from the Marshall 8x10 (and even 8x12) cabs like Robin Trower used to play. You'll need hernia surgery after load in for your first gig.
