-lay it flat and move camera angle closer to 90 degrees, I do this most often because its easiest, shitehawkanon gets good results this way on his phone
-lay or lean it on something to prop it up at an angle, I like to use things invisible to the camera, pic related is a pen cap wedged against the slide acting as a kick stand behind the grip
-balance it upright somehow like you did in your pic and take a pic head on, 1913 dust cover rails are a perpendicular surface that works but not every gun has them
Lighting is either going to need luck (if you happen to have a pretty table in front of a big window on a cloudy day and a phone camera that plays nice with diffuse light to play around with angles), or like SEG said any DSLR with a bounce flash aimed up. My whole camera setup is depreciated to probably $300 at this point
