Just because a post was made before you showed up doesn't make it indicative of early site culture.
"Reddit spacing" got its name because post formatting on reddit didn't (maybe it still doesn't, I don't know) register a new line without a double line break. Which made it a useful indicator for spotting crossposting redditors for years before the 2016 influx.
Desuarchive doesn't show many results between 2012 and 2016 because, as per the site itself:

It's not clear where archived data from before that date came from, as they don't say, but it's likely from the official 4chan archives and wouldn't reflect deleted posts (such as off-topic banter about reddit spacing, from back when jannies did their job).
