I think he usually leaves it up to the viewer. Personally I much prefer a stoned girl still being conscious. All the really fun parts happen after she's been transformed. Would be cool if she had dulled senses though, so her last really clear memory is her final moments before being turned to stone forever.

I think this works best with a very slow petrification. The rest of her body is gone but it's still sloooowly creeping up her neck. Plenty of time to chisel her down to the perfect form and play a couple of fucked-up games with her while she can still talk. Taunt her and mock her and explain in explicit detail just how screwed she is.

Show her each limb so she can truly understand how she's being modified for your pleasure. Prop her up in front of a mirror and ask her opinions on her new look. Interrupt every defiant speech and hateful insult and terrified scream by tossing part of her into a grinder, and letting the awful screeching and cracking and crunching drown her out. If she gets louder, just toss more in until she stops. And show her photos of all the places her limbs ended up.
