The movie will cross $200 million world wide this weekend and will probably cross $100 million in the US either this weekend or next. By the time it leaves theaters it'll have done very similar numbers to the first movie which isn't terrific but given that they didn't throw a bigger budget at the sequel, if it does basically the same numbers it'll be good enough.
If Universal and Dreamworks had predicted this would be the #1 animated movie of the year and threw a $150 million budget at it and another $100 million for marketing then either they would be quietly canceling plans for a third movie or they'd be reaping a bigger reward.
I think ultimately August was a bad month to release an animated movie in. It's a mistake the movie can recover from but it was also a missed opportunity. If it had released in March a month before Minecraft it would probably be doing a lot bigger numbers. Universal may have also jumped the gun wanting to avoid Elio since they didn't know it was going to be a flop with families, although given how much more buzz it got on social media maybe it would have sucked what little oxygen was left away from Bad Guys 2.
It's really hard to say for sure what could have been done different but clearly, the people who are watching the movie are loving it even if it's a bit of a sleeper hit. It'll at least be profitable for the studio eventually so a third movie is probably coming. I just hope that they spend the in between years pushing people to watch the first two movies at home and building up more of a brand around it so that the third one can get more eyes on it.
Maybe they'll even push to get an Oscar nomination for it. Or at the very least, the MTV Best Kiss award.
