>The woman was much amazed
>To find such a body there.

>Soon she recalled
>The rumor of the stolen child;
>She went into Lincoln
>To the Dernstall, where the child was born.

>When she came to the house,
>To the step-father of the child Hugh,
>To the worthy man she said at once:
>“Listen now to me:

>I have found the body of a child
>Outside Lincoln,
>On top of a well in the morning.
>I advise you to examine it.

>Speedily the worthy man agreed
>Because of the great suspicion
>He had that the abduction
>Was the work of Jews by treason.

>Throughout the city the woman went crying:
>“In a well I have found a child
>Lying all naked behind the castle.
>Let examination be made at once!”

>Those who heard the woman’s cry
>All ran to the well;
>There they found the child’s body.
>They all prayed for his soul.
