When I was taking Electives in 2021 at UCLA I was told very clearly and openly by several academic advisors that taking Mandarin wasn't reccomended as the Chinese boom was already ended and most opportunities were already taken by Chinese who were learning English, much more than we were learning Mandarin.
That and working in China involved so much beauracratic insanity it would make you desperate to quit and return home, and then they'd threaten to sue you and take your passport if you tried to quit early.
