This is my fifth time in Japan, and I can never get enough of this country.
Still have yet to find the courage to talk to a Japanese girl, or foreigner.

I would recommend going anytime outside of July and August, as the heat is almost unbearable.
I heavily recommend just staying in one city and do day trips to other parts of the country. I like to stay in Tokyo and take the bullet trains down south. Make sure you get the JR Pass if you plan on going anywhere outside of Tokyo during the stay.
In terms of language I would urge you to learn the number 1-50. It is not necessary at all, but I've found that knowing numbers at restaurants is very useful.
My final suggestion is to please try to obey social customs. You don't have to be fluent or anything just please respect common norms like being quiet on the train and standing on one side when taking the escalator.
