Most irrelevant franchise in the NBA, possibly in sports too.

They have a championship though. The Clippers, Hornets, Pelicans and Nets are probably the most irrelevant

nah. Clippers have been in the news for lob city and kawhi-pg. Hornets have lamelo so people are forced to talk about them. Pelican had AD and have Zion now to talk about. Nets had KD, Kyrie and harden.
When's the last time Wizards were discussed? Beal-Wall? MJ joining? they have such forgettable branding too

Considering 20 million people in SoCal want nothing to do with them, there isn't a bigger irrelevant franchise. Just because Balmer's money paid off the media with favors and access, doesn't mean they're relevant. The only time a team like the Clippers is relevant is when they play or mention the Lakers

What about the Anaheim Ducks and the San José Sharks? I've never seen anybody talk about them except "The Ducks are based on that Disney movie". And what about anything from Buffalo?
I say this knowing full well that there's a high chance of me embarrassing myself, I don't live in North America after all, and my limited on American sports is limited

Market is obviously big enough to sustain a popular NBA team (big population, rich people, black people, even rich black people!) but the team has always been dogshit. Their most noteworthy and interesting teams as the Wizards were the Gilbert Arenas teams where they pulled guns on each other in the locker room

Speaking of market, how do people determine what team is a big market and what's a small market? Like why is nuggets considered a small market despite having won a ring in 2023, and why is the knicks considered a big market despite not winning a ring for like, idk, several decades?

I'm not american obviously, so i'm just trying to understand

Market = media market. More people generally means a bigger market. This often means the teams get more attention (since more people care about them), which can give them more fans, which can give them more money, even when the team sucks (see: Dallas Cowboys, New York Knicks).

championships have nothing to do with market sizes, its based off location and overall value of the team, another factor is how hot/popular of a destination it is for free agents to sign
usually small market teams have to build themselves from the draft and trades, you rarely ever get big names going there unless they get traded or they're way beyond their prime
example: the bucks are another small market that won a ring not to long ago, their main star giannis was drafted to the team, but they've never really signed a major name in free agency
however, they were able to acquire damian lillard in a trade, although it backfired (but thats a different conversation)
these aren't permanent labels either, if a team manages to stay successful for long enough they can turn themselves into a larger market, like the warriors did, although this is a rare occurance, and gsw's success also has to do with the fact that they're located in california, which made it a lot easier to attract media attention

Think of all the expansion talks. It's always "City X is so big/has such a large metro, they would be a good addition (because it would be profitable for the owners, who are the ones to get the entire thing rolling)". And the next argument is always "And there is enough room between them and [city that already has a team and holds a certain influence in the region, posing a potential rival in the battle for customers]"
It's all a cold calculation of how many customers there are and how much capital there is. Or at least that has been the absolute norm for decades now. Green Bay having an NFL team doesn't really make sense by modern standards, but it works for historical reasons

I think a lot of the market talk is "old head" east coast/LA sportswriter bias from decades ago which is why I usually try to shy away from it. Wizards are obviously a special case though because I do feel like people would come out of the woodwork if they finally got a good team

Funnily enough the DMV is produces the most D1 basketball players in the country. None of them want to play for the Wizards. Wizards are a weird team where they have been bad so long that while there is local support there aren't a lot of die hard fans. Name change certainly didn't help, especially to something like the Wizards which has no local significance. Owner didn't even change the name because of the gun violence in the city, he did it because he was upset his friend in Israel was assassinated.

It's the Magic. Nobody cares about the Magic and any star player they get will be gone in 3 years and they'll be back to at least a decade of rebuilding. Even when they were hot early last year pre-injuries nobody cared about them.

I hate this fucking team so much.

seriously, prior to splash bros era their peak was the run tmc and we believe warriors
